TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the objection to the Maroochy Sands extraction operation at Forest Glen.

Sunshine Coast Council received a development application (MCU15/0030) to extract up to 1,000,000 tons of sand annually in a 2.5km long area of pasture land at Forest Glen. The site borders Eudlo Creek and residential areas. This application is opposed as:

a) its scale of operation is incompatible with present rural and urban residential living,
b) it sits astride a major north-south wildlife corridor for the Sunshine Coast and will damage the environment we believe provides habit to protected species including platypus and koala,
c) dust from the plant will harm the health of residents and that of the adjoining Montessori School,
d) noise from the plant will harm the learning at the school and those living in the area,
e) floodplain capacity to store flood water will be degraded, exacerbating downstream flooding,
f) water quality of the downstream marine Eudlo Creek with its declared fish habitat will be degraded,
g) extraction operations will result in 25% of the journey from the Bruce Highway to Maroochy Beach being an eyesore to our visitors, harming the economy of the Sunshine Coast,
h) traditional aboriginal artefacts and cultural values in the area will be lost,

i) road infrastructure, including local bridges, is not able to safely carry in volume of heavy trucks (one every ten minutes).

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to use its powers to prevent the extraction operations proceeding.
