The petition of Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House our opposition to the construction of the greyhound racing track at Cronulla Park.  We believe plans for construction should not proceed and should be replaced with plans for a more inclusive, multi-use facility for the community, for the following reasons.

• Animal welfare concerns: there are significant concerns regarding over-breeding, injuries and wastage (killing dogs excess to owners' needs) in the industry. Creation of another track will only serve to exacerbate these problems.

• Socioeconomic concerns: The Logan region faces a number of challenges brought about by lower socioeconomic conditions and higher than (national) average unemployment rates. A venue which promotes gambling, in association with alcohol consumption, is not in the Logan community's best interest as the community already experiences amongst the highest rates of problem gambling in the state.

• Health status concerns: the reported rate of physical inactivity amongst Logan residents is higher than both the state and national average (State of the City Report, 2013). The land at Cronulla Park could be utilised to promote a healthier, active lifestyle to decrease rates of overweight and obesity.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to oppose the construction of the Greyhound Racing Track at Cronulla Park on social, economic and animal welfare grounds in favour of a more inclusive, multi-use facility for the community.
