TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland residents draw to the attention of the House that:

(a) 2014 marks the centenary of the establishment of the Gladstone Harbour Board, the forerunner of the Gladstone Ports Corporation;
(b) the Gladstone Ports Corporation is a major part of state and regional economies through its diverse existing and future facilities in Gladstone as well as through its ownership of Port Alma and the Port of Bundaberg; and
(c) the Gladstone Ports Corporation is a major local and regional employer and a significant contributor to community causes and facilities.

Your petitioners therefore request the House to reject any plans to privatise the Gladstone Ports Corporation Ltd through a 99-year lease over the port and its operations on the grounds that any sale will directly threaten local and regional jobs and the Corporation's contributions to the community as private owners seek to make efficiencies and generate profits for shareholders residing outside the region as well as interstate or overseas.
