TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the speed limit on the Bruce Highway, El Arish 4855 is 80kph. El Arish has four residential streets joining the Bruce Highway. There are no turning or passing lanes provided to access these streets. Each day of the school year, four buses make a total of 16 turns onto or off the Bruce Highway to get to the bus exchange point at El Arish Police Station. Approximately 120 school students travel on these buses to and from Mission Beach, Tully and Innisfail every school day. As there are no turning or passing lanes on this section of the Bruce Highway, turning onto or off the highway is dangerous, especially for school children walking or cycling home from the school bus along the highway. Also, the risk of a large vehicle running at high speed into the rear of a bus attempting to turn off the highway is an ever present threat. It is only a matter of time before a serious accident will happen. In these days of ever increasing pressure from the Police Service, State and Federal Governments and motoring organisations for road safety surely there can be no real reason not to reduce the speed limit. Speed limits in this area have been reduced to save Cassowaries. Can we do the same for our children?

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to reduce the speed limit on the Bruce Highway, El Arish 4855 from 80kph to 60 kph.
