The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House, the threat that mining operations will pose to the Steve Irwin Reserve and the Bimblebox Nature Refuge. The Australian National Reserve System Program has put in substantial money into establishing the Bimblebox Nature Refuge and the Steve Irwin Reserve. This is a testament to the importance of these areas. Both have significant environmental value and are too important to destroy. The Black Throated Finch has been spotted on the Bimblebox Refuge, it is endangered. Steve Irwin campaigned for the protection and preservation of Australian native wildlife. Steve Irwin Reserve is also a memorial to Steve Irwin, “The Crocodile Hunter”.

Your petitioners therefore request the House to implement legislative changes to ensure that Bimblebox Nature Refuge is not mined. For the Steve Irwin Reserve we request the House not to alter legislation that currently protects the reserve from being mined.
