TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
The petition of citizens of Queensland draws to the attention of the House the State Government’s repeated failure to respect the rights of private landholders, most recently evidenced by amendments to the Vegetation Management Act 1999 and the Land Act 1994 passed by Parliament on 27 March 2003 which allow government officers to enter private property without consent or a warrant, reverse the onus of proof, remove the defence of mistake of fact and remove certain privacy rights including the right to remain silent for landholders under government investigation. Your petitioners therefore request the House to rescind these amendments and commission an open and independent review of the State’s vegetation management laws.
