TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House that during April this year 28 green turtles were found dead on our beaches, the majority of these deaths can be attributed to the use of commercial nets in the river to harvest the new barramundi stock as a result of recent flooding from Awoonga Dam.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to make urgent changes in the legislation to prevent further devastation of our protected marine animals. To ban the use of netting in the Boyne River and ensure that our vulnerable marine turtles, dugongs and marine life are responsibly protected.
