TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the 'review' of the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds Act 1988 by the Minister for Child Safety and Sport.

  • The Minister has stated that "the current Mt Gravatt Showgrounds Trust members have been effective in their roles with the showgrounds and facilities being managed successfully" (letter to Show Society 16 September 2010) - and this view is endorsed by the community.
  • The late Arthur Scurr fought a lengthy and expensive legal battle to ensure that the showgrounds were held as a community resource for the conduct of an annual show and eventually succeeded in his quest before the Privy Council.
  • The residents of Mt Gravatt and beyond value the showgrounds as an important community resource and also value its local management.
  • Your petitioners are concerned to see the Premier's announcement of the change of use of the Gold Coast Showgrounds for a housing development and do not want the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds to face the same fate.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to ensure that any review of the relevant Act retains the current procedure with respect to appointment of trust members and rules out any change of use of the showgrounds beyond that presently specified in the Act.
