TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House the concerns of members of Epilepsy Grief regarding the devastating statistics that three young people per week in Australia die as a result of Sudden and Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).

We the petitioners therefore request the House, in attempting to reduce the number of deaths from SUDEP, that:

  • Dedicated Epilepsy Clinical Nurses and Clinical Nurse Consultants be employed in each major regional and metropolitan public hospitals in Queensland; and
  • Seizure alarms (bed monitors) be placed on the medical aids subsidy scheme.
