The petition of citizens of Queensland draws to the attention of the House to the following:

We the undersigned express our opposition to the proposed plans for the Regent Theatre.  The current plan dishonours the heritage of the Regent and the demolition of the Elizabeth Street facade will forever diminish the streetscape.

We call upon the Queensland Government to intervene to ensure that any development maintain an ongoing, viable centre for live/cinematic entertainment, that will be guaranteed to be open to the people of Brisbane in an ongoing fashion, rather than the ad hoc arrangement of "multi-purpose auditoria' that is proposed.  Such development should draw upon the architectural style and furnishings of the original Regent Theatre, as presently maintained in the former "
Showcase" Cinema.  We also request an amendment to the 1992 Heritage Act to return the power to the minister to declare an "object" a heritage place.
