The petition of the residents of the Atherton Tablelands draws to the attention of the House that public access traits used by horse riders provide a safe and protected environment which encourages the young, elderly and urban dwellers into the great Australian bush.  Horse riding in the bush is ingrained in Australia’s heritage and is a hugely popular recreation on the Atherton Tablelands.

This petition calls for this Government to support healthy life styles where Australians can maintain connection to the culture and freedom of this country.

We therefore request the continuation of the existing public access traits in State forests in the event these State forests are transferred into National Parks.

The closure of these access trails will force those who wish to enjoy them onto public thoroughfares or worse still lose interest in the physical participation of life.
