The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House that the Cairns Regional Council intends to draw 15,000 ML of water per year from the Mulgrave Aquifer for urban water supply.  The petitioners believe that investigations into the impact of lowered water tables on the environments of the Mulgrave Valley are inadequate and that the Sustainable Planning Act process will not assess the environmental impacts of the taking of water due to a technicality regarding an existing Council water allocation.

Your petitioners therefore request the House to ask the relevant ministers to initiate an independent review of the report used to justify the proposal and further, to ensure that the impact of lowered water tables on Mulgrave environments will be considered in depth by the Sustainable Planning Act process.
