The petition of electors of the Division of Gympie draws to the attention of the House the loss of a doctor in Tin Can Bay to service patients unable to travel to the new medical practice location in Cooloola Cove. Tin Can Bay is classed as a remote community. It has many retirees and long term residents unable to drive to or otherwise access the new location of the medical practice which was in Tin Can Bay’s central shopping area for many years. There is no regular bus service and many patients cannot use a bus or access a pick-up point due to mobility restrictions. There is one tourist taxi which most could not afford, even if it were available. Your petitioners therefore request the House to instruct appropriate officials of the Dept of Health to investigate and verify the problem, with a view to requiring the medical practice to station one of its four doctors in the previous premises in Tin Can Bay. OR provide more suitable shuttle transport than that proposed by the practitioner (two days per week, three morning services, two pickup points in Tin Can Bay only and a regular bus with no “disabled features” for the thirty kilometre round trip). OR allowing a new doctor to set up practice in Tin Can Bay to service the growing population and the year-round tourist industry.
