TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House that: • The Queensland Water Commission has announced that a 63 hectare site on South Stradbroke Island previously listed as a potential desalination plant site has been rejected and removed from the shortlist of potential sites. • The site, which is adjacent to conservation park is vegetated with 'of concern' regional ecosystems and comprises essential habitat for the Walum sedgefrog, the Wallum froglet and the Wallum rocketfrog; • The site (Lot 17WD2688 and Lot 18 WD1474) is currently unallocated State land and has no protection against proposed development. Your petitioners therefore request the House to: • Request the Queensland Government to reject the site from further future consideration as a desalination plant; • Request the Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability to extend the South Stradbroke Island Conservation Park to include Lots Lot 17 WD2688 and Lot 18 WD1474 in order to protect the conservation values on the Island for future generations.
