TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws attention to the House that: • The Queensland Water Commission (an independent body of Government) has shortlisted a site on Bribie Island for future investigation as a potential desalination plant; • The site, which is adjacent to National Park has significant 'of concern' regional ecosystems, comprises essential habitat for vulnerable species and development could threaten the natural flow of underground aquifers; • Brine concentration produced by a desalination plant at the site would be discharged into a Marine Park and the shallow waters adjacent to the site will inhibit the distribution of that brine; • Establishment of a desalination plant on the Island is totally incompatible with the important conservation intent for the Island, which is a recognised flora and fauna reserved area. Your petitioners therefore request the House to: • reject the site from further consideration as a desalination plant; • protect for future generations values present on the Island.
