The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House, we the undersigned, are most concerned about the dangers associated with living near high voltage power lines proposed by Powerlink. Scientific epidemiological studies have shown higher incidence of cancer, particularly leukaemia in people exposed to electromagnetic fields produced by powerlines. We propose alternatives that are cleaner and safer to the environment and people’s health. Your petitioners therefore request the House to: 1. Direct the office of the Hon Geoff Wilson, Minister for Mines and Resources, not to endanger communities on the Sunshine Coast. 2. Direct Powerlink to come up with a safe alternative to the electricity supply, as it is a basic human right to live in a clean environment.
