The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House We, the undersigned, are most concerned about the 275 kv high voltage transmission lines, pylons and substation that Powerlink and the State Government of Queensland are proposing on the Eerwah Vale community. Recent studies continually warn us of the dangers. 'Avoid living near power sub-stations, power pylons, and over head power lines.' For those of us who have lived with cancer, who have just been diagnosed, or have lost loved ones from cancer, the ramifications of living close to high voltage transmission lines are devastating. The Leukaemia Foundation of Australia acknowledges and supports a 'prudent avoidance' approach in relation to high level EMF exposure. This is potentially a major health issue which also detrimentally affects this environment and beyond. Powerlink propose serious and dangerous infrastructure in our backyards. We wonder what the moral implications will be for those who insist on quoting outdated scientific data for such a project. Your petitioners therefore request the House to: 1. Direct ARPANSA to update their guidelines immediately in line with the most recent research and studies. 2. Direct Powerlink to relocate the alignment of the transmission line to a safe alternative, at a much greater distance away from residences.
