TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
To the Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland Queensland Residents draw to the attention of the House the asymmetrical provisions of the Education Act, whereby • parents and guardians are obliged to cause their children to attend school, but no reciprocal obligations is placed on schools or the Education Department to provide adequate and appropriate opportunities and facilities to young Queenslanders and their families; and • there are legal consequences for not causing one’s child to attend, and none for the failure of Education Queensland to provide adequate and appropriate opportunities and facilities for one’s child. Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to: • take the above into account in consideration of any proposed changes to the school leaving age; and • take steps to address this inequality in the law.
