TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
This petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House the recent, proposed State Development Area declaration which was made without any prior reference to the community, to Council or to other valid stakeholders, and has ignored the recommendations of this Government’s own departments – including the Environmental Protection Agency, National Parks and the Curtis Coastal Management Plan dated 2003 to acquire approx. 6,000 ha as per the proposed SDA declaration. Your petitioners therefore request the House to ensure, as a preference, protection of the entire island from industrial development or at the very least, to ensure the environmental integrity of the majority of the island, a full protection from industrial development of any type for the island east and north of the ridge (including South End).
