TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
Queensland Citizens draws to the attention of the House: that under the current Food Act 2006, Section 39 (4) Compliance with food standard code, and Standard 1.2.5 clause 3, Prohibition of Food Sold after the use-by date prohibits the provision of thousands of tones of good nutritional food annually to be provided to the desperately needy and homeless people, which will otherwise be dumped to landfill. Your petitioners therefore: request the House to enact relevant legislation similar to the Good Samaritan Act in Victoria, which is necessary to permit charities to provide food frozen prior to the “use by date” or “best before date” or any other form of expiry date for provision to the needy of the community.
