Budget Week 2017

Budget Week 2017-18

The Queensland Parliament's annual budget week sittings for 2017 occurred from 13 to 16 June.

On 13 June, the Treasurer delivered the budget speech and tabled the Appropriation Bills.
(An Appropriation Bill is a legislative act proposing to authorise the expenditure of public funds for a specified purpose.)
The second reading debate on the Appropriation Bills then followed on 15 and 16 June.

At the conclusion of this second reading debate, the Appropriation Bills were referred to the Parliament's portfolio committees for further scrutiny.
This is known as the estimates process with each of the Parliament’s seven portfolio committees tasked with scrutinising the proposed budgets for each of the government departments that they are responsible for overseeing. Collectively, the seven portfolio committees oversee and scrutinise all government departments.

Committees will then hold their estimates hearings over seven days of sittings, from 18 to 27 July 2017.
Following these hearings, each committee then reports their findings to the Parliament.

This scrutiny by the Parliament of the government's annual financial requirements is an important and powerful feature of the legislature's role.
