Budget Week 2013

Appropriation Bill

The Queensland Parliament and the Financial Process

The Parliament's annual Budget Week sittings ran from June 4 to 7.

The Budget Speech occurred at 2.30pm on Tuesday, 4 June with the Treasurer tabling and introducing the Appropriation Bills. (An Appropriation Bill is a legislative act proposing to authorise the expenditure of public funds for a specified purpose.)

The Second Reading Debate on the Appropriation Bills then occurred on 6 and 7 June. At the conclusion of this Second Reading Debate, the Appropriation Bills were referred to the Parliament's portfolio committees for further scrutiny. Each portfolio committee will hold an Estimates hearing into the Budget during the period of July 16 to 25. These hearings will be broadcast live on the Parliament's website.

The scrutiny by Parliament of the Government's annual financial requirements is an important and powerful feature of the legislature's role.
