Multi-Faith Service

Multi-Faith leaders

'United in Recovery' Multi-faith service - 14 February 2011

Speaker John Mickel hosted a multi-faith service at the Queensland Parliament on 14 February 2011.

The service was lead by seven religious leaders who offered prayers of remembrance for those whose lives were lost during the natural disasters that have impacted across Queensland in recent months.

Through unity in prayer, the multi-faith service emphasised how Queenslanders across a broad spectrum are united in the enormous task of recovery and rebuilding.

Message from the Speaker - 28 January 2011

The recent natural disasters to befall Queensland have highlighted the shared circumstances of the many, many thousands of people who have been adversely affected.

First the floods that inundated Queensland, and then the fury of Cyclone Yasi – both have illustrated how natural disasters do not discriminate in their impact. Mother Nature treats us all the same, and reminds us how we are all in this world of ours together.

In that vein, the magnificent response in the aftermath of these disasters revealed a shared humanity within our community that is not always readily evident. Our concern for one another and the tangible help provided so willingly to those in need has been real in every way.

On 14 February, a multi-faith service will be held at Parliament House to offer prayers of remembrance for those whose lives were lost, and prayers also for those who have suffered – some quite seriously – not only materially but psychologically as well from these natural disasters.

Through unity in prayer, the multi-faith service will emphasise how Queenslanders across a broad spectrum are united in the enormous task of recovery and rebuilding.

I invite you to attend and support this event.

John Mickel
Speaker of the Queensland Parliament
