Indigenous Youth Leadership Program, 3 June 2010

The Indigenous Youth Leadership Program was held at Parliament House from 30 May to 4 June 2010.

The program was attended by 40 young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders and saw them develop their leadership skills and learn more about the Queensland Parliament's democratic processes.

As part of this program, the young Indigenous leaders participated in an Indigenous Youth Parliament, which was held in the parliament's Legislative Assembly Chamber and chaired by the Hon John Mickel MP, Speaker of the Queensland Parliament, and other Members of Parliament. The Indigenous Youth Parliamentarians debated the mock Indigenous Youth Healthy Lifestyles Bill, which aimed to promote healthy lifestyles for future generations of indigenous youth in the Queensland community. They also debated a motion supporting measures to reduce cigarette smoking in Indigenous communities.

The Indigenous Youth Parliament was followed by a yarning circle.
