Representative Function

Members of Parliament represent all the constituents in their electorate. The Queensland Parliament has 89 members of Parliament, representing 89 electorates. Members are elected every three years. In Queensland, the voting method used for State elections is optional preferential voting.

An electorate is the geographical electoral district represented by the Member. Each Member represents an electorate of approximately 30,000 voters. This ensures that everyone’s vote has approximately the same value:  the one vote, one value principle. To vote, a person must be over the age of 18 and be on the electoral roll. For more information about voting, refer to the Electoral Commission of Queensland website:
http://www.ecq.qld.gov.au.

For detailed information on the representative function, refer to the fact sheet “Role of a Member of Parliament” in the resources section.

While performing their representative role, Members of Parliament may sponsor paper or electronic petitions (ePetitions). Samples of petitions have been provided on the petitions worksheet. The resources section contains detailed information and activities associated with the eDemocracy initiatives of the Queensland Parliament and the Queensland Government.
