Legislative Function

The term ‘legislation’ refers to statute law (law made by the Parliament) and applies to both Bills and Acts.  Before State legislation has been signed by the Queensland Governor, it is known as a Bill. Following Royal Assent, it is known as an Act. Queensland’s legislative process is simpler than that of the other States and the Commonwealth as Queensland does not have an Upper House.  (It was abolished in 1922). Now legislation needs to pass through only the Lower House.

This section contains flow charts of the legislative process at varying degrees of complexity. The simpler flow chart has an accompanying worksheet for students to fill in the blanks.

A mock Bill and a role play script have been provided so the students can act out the legislative process. A further mock Bill and script are available in the resources section.

The quiz “The Sources of Law” is suitable for senior secondary students. It is also available in an interactive form on the Parliament of Queensland website:  http://www.parliament.qld.gov.au.

Also for senior secondary students, the Legislation Research Activity uses the Parliament of Queensland website to show the process of legislative changes and to develop the students’ research skills.
