| School students from across the Far North
stood at the top of the political realm at Cairns' first Youth
Parliament held in August 2008.
Mirroring the Queensland Parliament, 89 youth members from 14 Far North schools, hit it out in head-to-head debate. In the sitting at the Cairns Regional Council, the Youth Education Bill 2008 was debated. Youth ministers and members each had their say, in a two-minute speech, arguing about learner driving and the road toll; compulsory community service; and also in one-minute speeches on youth violence. Legislative Assembly Speaker Mike Reynolds said the day's debate was recorded by Hansard and would be put in the hands of Premier Anna Bligh. "I'm delighted by the fact we have schools from Thursday Island, down to Innisfail and up into the Tableland," he said. A special guest at the Youth Parliament was Uncle Eric Deeral, the Queensland Parliament's only Indigenous Member of Parliament, who represented the National Party in the seat of Cook between 1974 and 1977.
