A portrait of the Honourable Tony McGrady was officially unveiled at Parliament House on 6 May 2009. Mr McGrady served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 9 August 2005 to 9 October 2006 and was the Member for Mount Isa from 1989 until his retirement in 2006.

QUEENSLAND PARLIAMENT MARKS APOLOGY TO STOLEN GENERATIONS,
13 February 2008
The Queensland Parliament marked
the Prime Minister's apology to the Stolen Generations yesterday with a
breakfast for over 150 Indigenous and non-Indigenous Queenslanders. The
bipartisan event paid tribute to the Stolen Generations of Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander children and their families.

FIRST INDIGENOUS LIAISON OFFICER
APPOINTED TO AN AUSTRALIAN PARLIAMENT, JANUARY 2008 The Queensland Parliament has
become the first Australian parliament to appoint an Indigenous Liaison
Officer. Mr Brett Nutley recently commenced employment with the
Queensland Parliament in the newly created position of Indigenous
Liaison Officer. He will be responsible for improving engagement between
Queensland's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' and the
Queensland Parliament.

'WIND YARN' UNVEILED AS A NEW
QUEENSLAND PARLIAMENT SYMBOL, 15 November 2007 A didgeridoo known as the 'Wind
Yarn' was unveiled today as a new symbol of the Queensland Parliament.
The didgeridoo was commissioned by the Speaker of the Legislative
Assembly, Mike Reynolds, for the Queensland Parliament's celebration of
the 40th anniversary of the 1967 Federal Referendum.

PICKERING JOINS WITH THE PARLIAMENT
TO PROMOTE QUEENSLAND WINES, 2 november 2007 Well-known cartoonist Larry Pickering joined forces with
the Queensland Parliament this week to unveil a new range of
parliamentary wines. Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Mike Reynolds,
officially launched the Parliament's new range of eight wines on the 2
November 2007.

parliament celebrates National Deaf Week,
October 2007 History was made in the Queensland Parliament
today when Question Time was interpreted in sign language to visiting
members of the deaf community. For the first time in the Parliament's
history, interpreters were situated in the Parliament's Public Gallery
to provide a sign language version of Question Time. Approximately 150
deaf persons filled the Parliament's Public Gallery to capacity to be
part of this historic occasion, marking the National Week of Deaf
People.

Established by a United Nations resolution in 1981, the International
Day of Peace was first celebrated in September 1982. Since then the
United Nations has set 21 September as the permanent date for the peace

QUEENSLAND PARLIAMENT SUPPORTS THE
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE, 21 September 2007 In an Australian first, a Proclamation for Peace was
today read by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland,
Mike Reynolds, during a function at Parliament House. Mr Reynolds is the
first Speaker of an Australian parliament to read such a Proclamation
marking the United Nations' International Day of Peace.

CHINESE LINKS WITH QUEENSLAND
PARLIAMENT STRENGTHENED THROUGH DONATION, 21 August 2007 Links between the Queensland Parliament and People's
Republic of China were today strengthened when Speaker Mike Reynolds AM
MP received a significant donation of books, CDs and DVDs from the
Chinese Consulate-General in Brisbane.
In a first for the Queensland Parliament, China's Consul-General in
Brisbane, Mr Ren Gongping made the important donation to Mr Reynolds in
recognition of the dynamic and growing relationship between China and
the State of Queensland.

In the past, to see Parliament in action, Queenslanders had to go to
Parliament House in Brisbane. All Queenslanders can now view state
parliamentary proceedings over the Internet following delivery of the
second stage of a three stage project aimed at increasing people's
access to Queensland's democratic processes.

Historic first address by the
Speaker of State Parliament to the Supreme Court of Queensland, December
2006 In December 2006, the Speaker, Mike Reynolds AM MP,
returned to the Supreme Court of Queensland a portrait of former
premier, the Honourable TJ Byrnes. Mr Reynolds also delivered an address
to the Supreme Court of Queensland at the invitation of the Chief
Justice, the Hon Paul de Jersey AC. This was the first occasion in
Queensland political and judicial history that a Speaker had attended
the Supreme Court in an official capacity.
