Community
Engagement coordinates existing education, communications and community
engagement activities, whilst also developing new initiatives to support
the Queensland Parliament and its Members to engage with the
community. Community Engagement develops its activities for all
Queenslanders, but particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
peoples, young people and regional Queenslanders.
The Community Engagement
unit was established in July 2007. There are nine staff positions in the
unit who work on parliamentary education; media; multimedia and
publications; parliamentary history; Indigenous liaison; and
protocol issues.
Community Engagement
- Outreach programs for regional Queenslanders, as well as young people and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- Management of community engagement projects, historical displays and related activities.
Education
- Seminars, workshops, conferences and Youth Parliaments for educators, secondary school students, university students, public servants, Members and their staff, and other client groups (both community service and fee paying).
- Educational and information resources for use in educational institutions and by the wider community.
- Parliamentary Internship Program, where university students undertake a nominated research project under the supervision of a Member of Parliament or senior officer of the Parliamentary Service.
Media and communications
- Promote parliamentary activities and events in order to improve community understanding and awareness of the role and activities of the Queensland Parliament.
- Media releases, speeches and associated services for the Speaker and Parliamentary Service.
- Communication strategies for Service wide projects, or projects involving multi sub-programs.
- Support effective communications between the Parliament and its clients, particularly within the Parliamentary Service.
Multimedia and publications
- Develop and maintain the Parliament’s website (internet and intranet).
- Provide multi-media design and publication services for the Parliamentary Service and Parliamentary Committees.
Community and Indigenous liaison
- Provide advice on protocol related matters, including Indigenous protocol as well as international and multicultural protocol.
- Provide secretariat support for parliamentary friendship groups and other parliamentary groups (such as the Parliamentary Lions Club).
- Provide support for Indigenous engagement strategy.
Historical projects
- Maintain and develop resources relating to the history of the Parliament, its committees and Members, buildings and events.
