Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the need to provide the long overdue referendum to all Queensland voters on the support for daylight saving to be reintroduced into Queensland from 2025.

The last referendum on the subject was held on 22 February 1992 after a three-year trial of daylight saving. This means anyone younger than approximately 49 years young have never had the opportunity to vote on their support.

We need consistency with the other eastern states for business, communications, social inclusion (trade, schooling, medical, retail et cetera) and general ease when dealing with modern life in our state and with travel (think about the confusion we would have in the 2032 Olympics) and tourism. Some arguments around aspects from northern state residents could be valid but most could be mitigated but we are one state and the majority must rule just as it did in 1992.

Daylight saving is a positive enhancer for our social, business and communities. Let Queenslanders decide on the viability and suitability.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House under the Referendums Act, to include on the same day as the 2024 general state election, the question: "Do you support the introduction of daylight saving from 2025".
